What is the Step-by-step process for internationally-registered pharmacists to follow to work in New Zealand as a pharmacist?

Any international pharmacist who aspires to work in New Zealand needs to follow the below mentioned steps.

Stage 1

English language

Pharmacy graduates who are aspiring to work in New Zealand should write the English language exam, such as IELTS Academic: get at least a 7.0 score in each section (skill) and an overall score of 7.0 or higher. OR OET: Get a minimum B grade in each band (skill)

Stage 2

Preliminary Review

After writing the English language exams, International pharmacy graduates who come under the non-REQR pathway should apply for the initial skill assessment and submit the documents to the Pharmacy Council of Newzealand

To apply for the initial skills assessment, you should have the following:
  • A pharmacy degree (e.g., BPharm, MPharm, or PharmD).
  • Current registration as a pharmacist in the country where you earned your pharmacy degree.
  • Relevant clinical work experience in a pharmacy setting as a registered pharmacist.
  • A pass in a Council-approved English language examination.

Stage 3

Pass the OPRA exam

After a successful preliminary review, the aspiring pharmacy candidates need to pass the OPRA exam, where the attempts for New Zealand are only 2

Stage 4

Enroll in the NZPL course

After successfully passing the OPRA exam, enroll in the NZPL course to understand the legal and ethical responsibilities of pharmacists working in New Zealand and to pass the NZPL course exam.

Stage 5

Register as a New Zealand Intern Pharmacist

After passing the 2 exams (OPRA and NZPLexam ), the pharmacist needs to find an internship, register as an intern pharmacist, and work under supervision.

Register as an Intern

Register in the Intern Scope of Practice with the Pharmacy Council

Enrol in EVOLVE

Register with the EVOLVE Program

Confirm Enrolment

Receive the Program Enrolment Confirmation from the pharmacy council.

Complete Intern Training

Apply for Full Registration

After completing your internship (EVOLVE program) and passing the New Zealand pharmacist OSCE exam, you must apply to the Pharmacy Council of New Zealand for Full Registration as a pharmacist.
