What is the OPRA exam registration process?
To sit the OPRA exam, you first need APC to confirm that you are eligible. This is called the Eligibility Check. Only after you get an email saying you can sit the exam can you book your seat. APC describes the whole Skills Assessment as two parts: passing the Eligibility Check and passing the OPRA exam. There is no expiry date on the Eligibility Check.
OPRA is a computer-delivered multiple-choice exam with 120 questions in 2.5 hours. It checks whether your knowledge of the biomedical, pharmaceutical and clinical sciences meets the standard needed for pharmacy practice in Australia.
Who can apply through the Knowledge Stream?
The OPRA pathway is called the Knowledge Stream. It applies if you completed your pharmacy qualification in any country other than Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the USA.
Your qualification must also meet these points:
- It must cover the pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences knowledge that forms the base of the pathway to general registration in Australia.
- It must be equal to 4 years of full-time study if completed after 1 January 2006, or 3 years of full-time study if completed before 1 January 2006.
- Evidence of registration is not required.
If any of this does not apply to you, APC says this pathway is not for you.
Which documents do you need?
| Document | Key point from APC |
|---|---|
| Passport | Upload a full image, not cropped, including the top and bottom pages |
| Official photo-bearing ID | Issued by an overseas or Australian authority, with your photo |
| Birth certificate | If you do not have one, you can give a second photo-bearing document |
| Qualification certificate or letter of completion | Must be for a pharmacy qualification, show the full degree and include the issue date |
| Academic transcript | All pages in one document, showing all subjects and results for every semester |
| Evidence of registration | Optional |
| Evidence of name change | Optional, needed only if your name differs across documents |
| Agent authorisation form | Optional, only if you want APC to talk to your agent |
APC also says you do not need to certify your documents and you do not need to show proof of English competency for the Eligibility Check. Do not post or email your documents. Upload them only in the candidate portal.
Step 1: Check that you are eligible
Read the criteria above and confirm your qualification fits the Knowledge Stream. If it does not, look at the other pathways on the APC Skills Assessment page.
Step 2: Prepare and translate your documents
If any document is not in English, get a full translation from a translator accredited by NAATI (the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters). APC does not accept translations from anyone else, and it does not accept extract translations unless they come from an Australian Government department such as the Department of Home Affairs. You must submit both the original and the English translation.
Make sure your name is written the same way on all documents. For your transcript, give the original document in full. APC also asks for a NAATI translation of the complete list of subjects and brief subject summaries, if you can provide them.
Step 3: Apply for the Eligibility Check
Follow these steps in the candidate portal:
- Sign in to the APC Candidate Portal.
- Start your Eligibility Check.
- Upload your documents.
- Pay the fee online (AU$810).
APC aims to respond within 5 working days after it has all required documents, but says to allow up to 4 weeks. If APC asks for more information, you have 6 months (180 days) to send it. After that, the application is closed and you must apply again and pay again. APC will email you (or your agent) to say whether you can sit the OPRA exam.
Step 4: Register for the OPRA exam
You can register only after you have completed the Eligibility Check and received APC's email confirming you can sit OPRA.
- Registration opens at 9am and closes at 5pm AEDT/AEST, about one month before exam day.
- Late registrations are not accepted.
- Some test centres fill fast, so book as early as you can. You can choose another centre if your first choice is full.
- You must pay at the time of registration or your seat will be released.
- APC accepts Visa or Mastercard credit or debit cards, plus Google Pay and Apple Pay. The card must be issued by a bank in your country of residence.
- If you need special accommodation, a health practitioner must complete and sign the Special Accommodation Request Form before you register. APC says it will email you the outcome within two business days.
You can reschedule your exam in the candidate portal, but only during the registration period. Cancellations are possible with a cancellation fee, and refund amounts depend on when you cancel.
Step 5: Prepare for and sit the exam
APC provides an OPRA exam guide with sample content, plus an exam day preparation page covering ID, breaks and what you can and cannot bring. APC will send a reminder email about 5 days before your exam. Elite Expertise's tip: read the exam day page early, so ID problems do not surprise you at the test centre.
Step 6: Check your result and request your SAO
APC emails you when results are ready. You view and download them from the candidate portal. The result says whether you passed or were unsuccessful, and nothing more. APC does not give exam scores or feedback.
If you are unsuccessful, you can re-sit as many times as you need. You register in the next exam period and pay the full fee again.
When you pass, you can request your Skills Assessment Outcome in the candidate portal. You use the SAO to support a visa application to the Department of Home Affairs. DHA sets the validity period for visa purposes, and APC cannot change it.
Step 7: Apply for provisional registration
After you pass OPRA, you need a period of supervised practice before general registration. You apply to the Pharmacy Board of Australia through Ahpra for provisional registration and approval of supervised practice. APC suggests calling Ahpra to talk about your circumstances. Ahpra decides the registration requirements, so check current English language and internship rules directly on the Ahpra website.
How much does each step cost in the OPRA Exam process?
| Step | Fee (AU$) |
|---|---|
| Eligibility Check | 810 |
| OPRA exam | 2,245 per attempt |
| Skills Assessment Outcome | 300 |
What are the 2027 OPRA exam dates?
The official OPRA exam dates for 2027 are 22–24 March, 26–28 July, and 8–10 November. APC has published the registration window and result date for each session on its website.
| 2027 Session | Registration Period | Exam Dates | Results Released |
|---|---|---|---|
| Session 1 | 19 January – 22 February 2027 | 22 – 24 March 2027 | 6 May 2027 |
| Session 2 | 11 May – 28 June 2027 | 26 – 28 July 2027 | 9 September 2027 |
| Session 3 | 14 September – 11 October 2027 | 8 – 10 November 2027 | 23 December 2027 |
Where can you sit OPRA in India?
APC lists these Indian test centres: Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi, Noida, and surrounding areas. APC also says seat availability varies, and test centres can reach full capacity or be unavailable for some sessions. If a seat opens up because of a cancellation, you can reschedule in the candidate portal.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying too close to the closing date. APC cannot guarantee your application will be assessed in time for your preferred exam.
- Sending documents by email or post. Only the candidate portal is accepted.
- Using an unaccredited translator.
- Cropping your passport scan.
- Paying anyone outside the APC candidate portal. APC warns about scams and advises using only OMARA-registered migration agents.
Conclusion
The OPRA registration process is simple when you follow it in order. Check your eligibility, prepare and translate your documents, complete the Eligibility Check, register for your exam window, and pay on time. After you pass, you can request your SAO and move on to provisional registration with Ahpra.
Plan early. APC suggests applying at least 8 weeks before registration closes, and it does not accept late registrations. Use only the APC candidate portal for every step. If you would like help with your OPRA preparation, the Elite Expertise team is here to support you.
