What is AHPRA Provisional Registration?
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) supports 15 National Boards — including the Pharmacy Board of Australia — in protecting the public and setting registration standards. All registered health practitioners in Australia are listed on the national register of practitioners managed by AHPRA.
Provisional registration is the mandatory licence that allows overseas-qualified pharmacists who have passed the OPRA or KAPS examination to legally begin their supervised internship in Australia. Without it, no supervised practice hours can be counted.
Before any supervised practice can commence, interns must:
- Have provisional registration approved by the Board and name recorded on the national register
- Have supervised practice arrangements approved by the Board with details recorded on the national register

Knowledge Stream vs Competency Stream

Competency Stream
Competency Stream candidates completed a different APC assessment pathway and are required to complete a shorter, customised period of supervised practice under limited registration. Supervision and assessment requirements are determined by the Pharmacy Board on a case-by-case basis.

Can I start my internship before supervised practice is approved?

What is the extemporaneous dispensing requirement?
As part of your internship, you must prepare six extemporaneous products and complete a product report for each. Your preceptor must also complete a statutory declaration once all six products are prepared.
